This program will prepare the resident to sit the certifying board examination in the specialty of Bovine Health Management as well as providing an introduction to clinical research by completion of the Masterate in Veterinary Studies. A Diploma of the European College of Bovine Health Management qualifies the owner to obtain registration as “Veterinary specialist in Cattle management and diseases” with the NZ Veterinary Council and the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council.

The role involves conducting clinical duties as part of the Farm Services Clinic in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital to gain in-depth knowledge of bovine health management and its supporting disciplines under the supervision and guidance of Diplomates of the ECBHM and senior farm animal clinicians. The program will cover bovine health and management at the individual animal and herd level, as well as the operation of cattle industries in New Zealand and elsewhere. In addition, training will be provided in key related disciplines (animal welfare, legislation, public health, zoonoses) as well as problem investigation, communication and leadership skills. The resident will be closely involved in the teaching and assessment of BVSc and BVTech undergraduates via practicals, supervision during clinical rotations and a small amount of lecturing. The resident is also required to partake in the afterhours roster by undertaking weekend and weeknight duties on a shared rota
