I am a Professor at ۶Ƶ and a Rutherford Discovery Fellow for the Royal Society Te Apārangi. I am the Co-Chair of the International Association for Disaster Reduction and Emergency Management founded by Tsinghua University.

Research: My work focus on Human Behavior in Disasters, Evacuation Modelling and Safett Training. My research make use of new digital  technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and BIM.

Teaching: My teaching focuses on BIM and Building Innovation Tools, Fire Engineering (Evacuation and Pedestrian Dynamic) and Research Methods (from statistical testing to regression modelling).

Roles: I am an Associate Editor for Safety Science (Elsevier) and Fire Technology (Springer). I am member of the Editorial Board of Fire Safety Journal (Elsevier), Virtual Reality (Springer) and Journal of Safety Science and Resilience (Elsevier). I have been guest edtior for Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory (Esevier) and Developments in the Built Environment (Elsevier). I have been a grant reviewer for the National Science Foundation (USA), Royal Society Apārangi (NZ), the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong, Austrian Science Fund (FWF), Dutch Research Council (NWO), National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (Chile), Occupational Safety and Health (UK) and Czech Science Foundation (Czech Republic).

Awards: I am the recipient of the 2020 ۶ƵResearch Medal - Early Career and the 2020 College of Science Research Award - Early Career. I have received the 5 under 35 SFPE award in 2022

Outputs: I have published more than 100 peer reviewed journal papers and chapters including a letter to Science.

Project Title: How much do they recall? Measuring the effect of safety training on human memory

Safety training is important. It reduces accidents in dangerous workplaces, such as construction sites. And it is important to refresh training to ensure people retain the lessons. But the recommended intervals between sessions vary wildly (from 6 months for building evacuations to 24 months for construction workers), because no one knows how long people retain the information. In this study, we will compare the efficacy of practical, theoretical, and virtual reality training. Our findings will ensure that the design and implementation of safety training programmes is empirically based. We will provide a sound scientific foundation for safety regulations worldwide. Project Title: Evacuee Tracking using Kinects

This project aims at developing an automatic system that can detect evacuees and measure their speed and densities while moving toward a safe place. This project uses smart cameras (i.e. Microsoft Kinects) and Artificial Intelligence to record and analyze data in real-time.
