Dr Kim Worthington
Senior Lecturer
Doctoral Mentor Supervisor School of Humanities Media and Creative CommMy current research focuses on questions to do with confession, apology, (secular) forgiveness, amnesty and reconciliation and the representation of these in contemporary literature. My approach employs theoretical and critical insights drawn from the work of Paul Ricoeur, Jacques Derrida, Emmanuel Levinas and J.M. Coetzee, among others. In many respects, my current research interests are an extension of my earlier work on narrative ethics and subjectivity (see, for example, Self as Narrative: Subjectivity and Community in Contemporary Fiction: Clarendon, 1996). I am currently working on a book that argues that a viable understanding of (secular) forgiveness requires a robust conception of narrative identity. This is explored via the work of analytical and continental philosophers (notably tracing the impact of Hannah Arendt’s thought on that of Paul Ricoeur) and through the close analysis of a range of contemporary fiction.
In recent years I have published book chapters and journal articles on fiction by Ian McEwan, J.M. Coetzee, Bernhard Schlink and Viet Thanh Nguyen. Recent conference papers include presentations on writing by Antjie Krog, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o and Jaspreet Singh.
I have research interests in (South and West) African literature and literature from/about South Asia (on which I have supervised several PhD theses). I am particularly interested in issues of refugeeism, diaspora and transnationality.
Between 2001 and 2007, I worked as a consultant and writer in commercial and governmental sectors. During this period, and in the years immediately after, I did not publish academic work (in explanation of the gap visible in my publications).
I am the coordinator of 139.239 (Literary Landmarks: Words that Changed the World), 139.352 (Postcolonial Literature) and 139.758 (Postcolonial Theory and Writing). I have supervised numerous postgraduate research reports, master’s theses, and doctoral theses. A list of PhD theses I have supervised at ۶Ƶ is provided below.
I am an experienced thesis examiner, a doctoral mentor supervisor and an appointed convenor for ۶Ƶ doctoral oral examinations.
