Dr Tanya Jurado MA (Hons), PhD, FHEA
Senior Lecturer
Doctoral Supervisor School of ManagementI have a longstanding interest in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and their role in society. I have worked on projects for the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the (former) Ministry for Economic Development and the Inland Revenue, and have also presented and published on SME policy development, and on how SME owner managers who export engage with the international trade environment.
Current research interests emerge from an underlying preoccupation with supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs to become more inclusive both socially and economically. I am working on projects on women entrepreneurs; SMEs and HR; the gender imbalance in IT; and, Indigenous entrepreneurship. Actively involved in the SME international research community, I have served as Vice-President Academic & Industry for the Small Enterprise Association of Australia and New Zealand and held the position of co-Chair of the Entrepreneurship and SMEs stream for the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Management for several years. I was a Visiting Fellow at the Small Business, Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development Research Group at Portsmouth University.
I regularly review for journals in the entrepreneurship field including the International Small Business Journal, Small Enterprise Research, International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Journal of Asian Business and Economic Studies, and for international conferences such as RENT, ICSB, ACERE and ANZAM.
I hold a PhD and a PGDipBusAdmin in Management from ۶Ƶ, and a BA and MA (Hons) in History from the University of Auckland.
I am a Senior Lecturer (R2) at the School of Management where I teach entrepreneurship and business ethics. My research focusses on SME internationalisation and public policy support for SMEs, including Indigenous entrepreneurs who export. I am part of a $15m study funded by the MBIE Endeavour Fund on Indigenising trade. I also research the retention of women in IT, as well as AI adoption.
Currently I serve as President of the Small Enterprise Association of Australia and New Zealand and as Editor in Chief of Small Enterprise Research.

Teaching and Supervision
Teaching Statement
I have extensive experience teaching undergraduate, postgraduate, distance and face-to-face courses in the following areas:
- entrepreneurship
- business ethics and sustainability
- business and society
- business model innovation
- international business
- new venture development
- corporate strategy
- organisational behaviour
- small business management
I currently teach entrepreneurship for the Bachelor of Business and corporate citizenship and responsibility for postgraduate students. I value reflection and encouraging students to question sources of information and develop critical thinking skills. Group work and collaboration are also important features of my teaching.
Graduate Supervision Statement
I view the unique relationship that develops through the supervisory process as a partnership where I serve as a guide and a mentor during the research journey. I have two overarching interests: one is in the social contribution of business, and the other is to do with the gender disparity in the information technology sector. I am open to supervise a range of topics within those two overarching interests. As well as my research experience, I bring to the supervision a focus on qualitative methods, that draws on historical and contextual approaches.
Dr Tanya Jurado is available for Masters and Doctorial supervision.
