Dr Fei Ying BEng, MEngMgt, PhD
Senior Lecturer in Quantity Surveying
Doctoral Supervisor School of Built EnvironmentIn Liji, The Book of Rites, one quote resonates with educators: "Learning makes one know what s/he does not know; teaching makes one realise their insufficiency. Knowing not knowing everything encourages self-reflection; realising insufficiency urges further education. i.e. 'S/he who teaches, learns'". In Te Reo Māori, Ako means both to learn and to teach. It acknowledges how new knowledge and understanding grow from shared learning experiences. Māori and Chinese cultures echo each other in their teaching principles. Consequently, I concluded the best way forward as an academic is to engage in research-informed teaching and practice-informed research.
Fei is a senior lecturer in Quantity Surveying at ۶Ƶ's School of Built Environment. Prior to joining academia, she advised and acted for public and private sector clients in the transportation, water, and construction sectors, with a track record in delivering successful outcomes for clients in New Zealand, China and Germany. Fei's research covers procurement management, supply chain management and decision-making in construction management. Her current research pivots to the interdisciplinary area of construction informatics focused on digitalising the construction process through the lens of social science in human behaviour change.

Research Interests
My current research pivots to the interdisciplinary area of construction informatics focused on digitalising the construction process through the lens of social science in human behaviour change.
I am investigating how to change professionals' perceptions, beliefs and behaviours in designing, delivering, and managing construction projects. This includes quality management, procurement management, and supply chain management.

Teaching and Supervision
Teaching Statement
My learning and teaching goal is to develop thoughtful, critical, engaged, and independent thinkers, partnering with our colleagues and industry practitioners. In adult learning, particularly postgraduate settings, my primary role is learning facilitator and steward responsible for creating an engaging and open learning environment. I believe education is about learning, not teaching. Learning should be constructively aligned with future career pathways. Throughout my teaching career, I have sought to engage students, stretch their intellect, expand their critical thinking skills, and prepare them for their immediate graduate work experience. I encourage and challenge students to utilise their acquired knowledge in finding solutions to problems encountered.
