After four years in deer by-product processing industry then nineteen in the dairy processing industry RIchard Archer returned to ۶Ƶ in 2004 to head Engineering, and then the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Human Health.
Richard Archer was Chief Technologist of the large MBIE-funded FIET programme on food process engineering and now leads a number of projects and programmes, mostly for food industry companies in New Zealand and overseas. He is a recent President of NZIFST.

Prizes and Awards
- From NZIFST website: "This, the Institute's most prestigious award, is presented annually in memory of ۶Ƶ's first Chancellor, Dr John Clark Andrews, who proposed that a food technology degree course be established at ۶Ƶ. The award recognises Institute members who have made a substantial contribution to science and technology and leadership in the food industry. Nominations are considered by the President’s Committee, which comprises the President and available immediate three Past-presidents. The Institute Council endorses the nomination “in committee”. The winner is invited to give a keynote address on a topic of their choice at the NZIFST annual conference. The name of the winner is not made public until announced at the conference when an engraved plaque is presented and citation read.
