Teaching and Supervision
Graduate Supervision Statement
Most of my scholarship addresses issues concerning communication and successful aging, with particular emphases on intersections between family communication, health, and well-being. I have also been doing work in the broad area of intergroup communication. Over the past few years, my research activities have focused on:
- Developing and testing the Communicative Ecology Model of Successful Aging (e.g., ).
- Examining socio-cognitive phenomena such as age metastereotypes and mentally simulated intergroup contact affect expectations for/evaluations of intergenerational talk (e.g., and ).
- Issues relating to intergenerational communication and ageism ().
- Exploring experiences of being an MTurk worker (“Turker”) and identifying how researchers can minimize the frustrations that are encountered by workers on crowdsource platforms (e.g., ).
I have been very lucky in my own academic career. My own doctoral supervisor (Jon Nussbaum) was incredibly supportive and struck a perfect balance between giving me space to develop independently as a scholar while stopping me from making catastrophically stupid decisions. He also offered me opportunities to contribute to his own research and collaborate on writing manuscripts, and, although I didn’t take him up on nearly as many of these offers as I should have, these helped me grow into a good academic writer.
In my own postgraduate supervisions, I try to emulate Jon as closely as possible. I give detailed feedback on drafts, make myself available for discussions, push students to ask interesting and worthwhile questions, and invite doctoral students to be involved in research that I’m conducting. Something I’m also incredibly grateful to Jon for is that he had a very strong sense that students owned their own work. Somewhat intimidatingly, this meant that the ultimate responsibility for the work’s quality lay with the student themselves! But it also meant that (barring really unusual circumstances, such as a doctoral student leaving academia) lead authorship for publications based on the student’s research always belonged to the student.
What I bring to the table as a supervisor is a careful, critical eye when it comes to issues of methodology and analysis: I’m a good person to have on hand when it comes to designing quantitative studies such as experiments and surveys, but I also appreciate well-conducted qualitative work. I’m also a pain in the arse when it comes to expecting a high standard of writing from students: This can make me extremely irritating, but also makes it unlikely that your work will go out to be read by others before it’s ready!
Associate Professor Craig Fowler is available for Masters and Doctorial supervision.
