Dr Long Chen DPhil
Lecturer
School of People, Environment and PlanningLong is a lecturer in Geographic Information Science. Originally from China with a background in surveying, Long holds a PhD in GIS from the University of Otago (2022) and an MSc in Geospatial Science from the University of Edinburgh (2012). Before joining ۶Ƶ as a lecturer, Long worked as a GIS team leader at the Manawatū District Council (2023–2025), and before that in a publicly listed GIS company (2013–2017), gaining extensive experience in both academic research and industry applications.
Long's research focuses on cartography, and using spatial analysis, modeling, and geovisualization to better understand real-world problems and support decision-making.
